Course Description

Are you new to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or need to use GIS as part of your job now and are struggling to know what you need to know? This total beginners 1 day course will show you the fundamentals when using geospatial software in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Cut through all the jargon and learn the first steps of a new transferable skill. You will have an understanding of QGIS and uses a series of practical exercises to build confidence. Places are limited to 4 delegates to ensure a high level of individual attention and time for questions. What this course covers: - Getting started with QGIS, concepts & using the software - Creating & Editing Data, using attribute tables, labelling, and loading data - Styling, basics of cartography & sharing styles - Sourcing & using data, licensing & copyright - Querying your data & using research tools - How to store & share data - Creating a map for printing and how to share it - Terminology cheat sheet & further learning resources For this course you will need to have installed QGIS (minimum Version 3.28.14 LTR). This is free to use and download software available from https://www.qgis.org/en/site/. Once you've booked your course you will receive a confirmation email detailing the course time and date. We will send you the course work booklets & sample data 3 days in advance of the course start date for you to set up and download. We recommend you have a second screen in order to see your work booklets and the QGIS software at the same time. Alternatively, you could print these off. Webinars are via Zoom so you won’t need any new software to attend. This course will be delivered online using a combination of Zoom for video conferencing & screen sharing, as well as remote desktop access to a hosted QGIS 3 environment. We recommend that you have access to a second display for your computer or something you can use to display course notes, QGIS, and video conferencing simultaneously.
