This 2 day course is perfect for ecologists & people working in the environment sector. Across two days you'll learn the fundamentals of GIS that you can confidently implement in your work. Your filly illustrated step-by-step workbook and course exercises use typical environmental sector datasets and by the end of the course will have produced several report ready maps. This course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to increase their skills, or for those migrating to Open Source technology from proprietary products.
Learning Outcomes
Getting Started
Introduction to the software, user interface and how to configure and customise for your needs. You'll learn the key terminology and how GIS can be used in the Environment, Transport & Ecology Sector.
Creating & Editing Vector Data
Learn to create, load, edit and export vector datasets. You'll gain experience of a range of open-data sources and work with the attributes as well as learning how to join spatial & non-spatial data.
Raster Data
Learn to load, style and complete basic processing of raster data. You'll use several sources of open source data as well as more lightweight API based sources.
Plugins
Plugins are written by independent developers and add useful features. You'll gain experience of several which make environment work more streamlined and easier such as TomBIO & the FSC Toolbox.
Styling your data
You'll learn how to apply colour and labels for your data using simple styles as well as more complex data driven methods. Understanding best practise for different methods for you to create compelling visuals.
Sourcing data
When you're new to GIS you'll want to know where to find accurate & reliable data from legitimate sources. You'll have a list of data sources to get you started for the Environment Sector.
Queries & research
Learn how to perform queries on your data using selections, calculations, filtering and expressions. You can then use these skills to create workflows on regularly performed actions.
Storing data
Learn the best practise for storing & sharing data whether it's just for you or for your organisation. You'll also learn how to export, save and share data.
Georeferencing
You'll learn to use several tools to georeference images and PDFs into your workspace for background mapping or for digitising data.
Biodiversity Net Gain
Using the Biodiversity Net Gain QGIS template you'll map a simple habitat baseline & post development before exporting the calculations.
Habitat Mapping
Create report ready map outputs as images or PDFs. Gain an understanding of layered PDFs (which always impress) and get hands on experience with UKHab & Biodiversity Net Gain styling.
Further learning resources
You'll receive a terminology cheat sheet, data sources list and further learning resources to help you embed your new skills.
